Erie's Sunflower Club donated $50,000 on Wednesday to the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation.

That gift -- the largest donation in the club's history -- equates to funding one week of cancer research, said Mark Neidig Sr., the foundation's executive director.

Officials of the social club, 340 Metz St., presented Neidig with a check during an afternoon ceremony.

"This is unprecedented in the scope of what we do,'' Neidig said. "That a group of people got together and unanimously agreed this was the place to send their donation is humbling. It again re-emphasizes just how generous this community is and how much they support what we're doing.''

This past Monday, Lester Smith, oil tycoon and founder of the PinkWell Challenge announced that he was going to be on the Ellen DeGeneres Show the next day. On this broadcast, he would announce that he was giving a $25,000 donation, in honor of Ellen's work to eradicate breast cancer, to an organization making a significant impact on breast cancer care, support and research. Be patient. That seems to be the take-away message from the much-anticipated visit of Dr. Stephen Curley to Erie on Thursday.

Curley is the lead researcher on the cancer treatment device invented by Erie radio engineer John Kanzius. Curley announced during his trip to Erie from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston that progress has been made in testing the effectiveness of the Kanzius' device to kill cancer cells. Curley's research shows that the external radio-frequency generator destroys cancer cells in live mice without harming healthy tissue. He used a baseball analogy to explain the significance of that finding.

The year began with hope and promise, and ended with a list of major accomplishments, including a research staff that grew from one part time assistant, to 13 full-time medical professionals. All of the items listed below were made possible by your gifts, from $1 to $500,000....each gift makes a difference.

About Clinical Trials ~

Clinical trials are conducted in phases. The trials at each phase have a different purpose, and they help scientists answer different questions:

In Phase I trials, researchers test an experimental drug or treatment in a small group of people (20 to 80) for the first time to evaluate its safety, to determine a safe dosage range, and to identify side effects.

Adrian Koury ~

Adrian was born and raised in San Diego. He is the youngest of 7 siblings, and family has always been the most important thing. Adrian has added a beautiful wife and three amazing children to their brood. Angela has been the love of his life for the last 13 years. They have a 19 year old son, Armando, who has decided to start his adult life in service of others as a proud member of the US Army. He is currently on the front lines, stationed in Afghanistan. Kai, their 14 year old son, is a bright young man who is also a member of the JROTC. Marlee, 9 years old, is their baby girl and is the actress, director, singer extraordinaire, and is destined for amazing things. In 2003, Adrian was living the life of a successful business owner and family man. His concrete company, Pacific Coast Concrete, was growing and thriving. His beautiful family was complete and life was beautiful. Nobody could have foreseen or expected what life would bring them next.

Toni Dillon was thirty eight years old when a lump was discovered, and the following year she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Although her diagnosis was devastating, Toni decided she was going to stay strong and fight off her cancer. Toni was treated with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Knowing that her beautiful, waist-length hair would fall out from her treatment, Toni did the one thing that she felt she had control over and she donated her 18 ½ inch braid to Locks of Love. As she was approaching her "magic mark” of being a five year survivor, she received news that a new form of breast cancer was discovered and the first form had metastasized to both of her lungs.

Tia Deas ~

In October of 2010, 30 year-old Tia Deas was diagnosed with stage three, triple negative breast cancer. Tia discovered two large lumps in her breasts during a self-examination. Finding it odd, she went to the doctor where she had a mammogram and a biopsy done. The biopsy came back as cancerous. Being told that she had breast cancer came as a shock for Tia, especially since she had no known history of cancer in her family. The news immediately put Tia’s life into a new swing of constant worry and anxiety about the treatment she would receive.

Erie Federal Credit Union ~

For one Pennsylvania credit union, it would have been hard enough to lose an employee to cancer in July 2009. But, when it lost another employee two months later, the call to action couldn’t have been louder or clearer.

So, the Erie Federal Credit Union (EFCU) answered the call by creating a fundraiser that allowed any one of its members to raise money for KCRF.

February 3, 2012, Erie, PA - Our recent manuscript published in Nanomedicine describes some very relevant findings. We have learned that gold nanoparticles must be in solution, in other words not stuck to one another, to release heat in the Kanzius RF field. We also learned that when the gold nanoparticles are taken into cancer cells, they end up packaged into little containers called endolysosomes. The environment of the endolysosome is somewhat acidic, which causes the gold nanoparticles to aggregate (stick together). This reduces the effectiveness of the Kanzius RF induced heating. Thus, we have learned we can improve the heating by changing the environment in the endolysosomes so that the gold nanoparticles stay in solution and thus release enough heat to produce lethal damage upon treatment in the Kanzius RF field.

A new manuscript, “Internalization of C60 fullerenes into cancer cells with accumulation in the nucleus via the nuclear pore complex,” published in the journal Biomaterials, presents some exciting results related to the Kanzius radiofrequency field treatment. The Kanzius/Curley Lab at MD Anderson is the first laboratory group in the world to demonstrate that they can get carbon nanoparticles (C60 fullerenes) into the nucleus of cells. DOWNLOAD HERE
