New, larger Kanzius device ready for use ~

The next step in turning John Kanzius' cancer-killing dream into reality sits in a Millcreek Township laboratory.

A new, larger version of the late Millcreek inventor's external radio-frequency generator is finished and will be shipped in January to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

This fifth-generation device is big enough for M.D. Anderson researchers to use on larger animals and humans.

A couple days before the entry of the New Year, I watched the newly released movie "New Year's Eve." In both "NYE" scenarios, the celebrations were crazy and people were having a good time, just as they were last year, and the year before and long before that.

Erie's Sunflower Club donated $50,000 on Wednesday to the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation.

That gift -- the largest donation in the club's history -- equates to funding one week of cancer research, said Mark Neidig Sr., the foundation's executive director.

Officials of the social club, 340 Metz St., presented Neidig with a check during an afternoon ceremony.

"This is unprecedented in the scope of what we do,'' Neidig said. "That a group of people got together and unanimously agreed this was the place to send their donation is humbling. It again re-emphasizes just how generous this community is and how much they support what we're doing.''

This past Monday, Lester Smith, oil tycoon and founder of the PinkWell Challenge announced that he was going to be on the Ellen DeGeneres Show the next day. On this broadcast, he would announce that he was giving a $25,000 donation, in honor of Ellen's work to eradicate breast cancer, to an organization making a significant impact on breast cancer care, support and research. The Ellen PinkWell Award would be given to only one organization; one of the 155 that had sent in a proposal to participate in a bigger challenge beginning on January 1, 2012.

In honor of their 75^th Anniversary, The Erie Community Foundation (ECF) gathered local nonprofit organizations for a celebratory check presentation at the Erie Zoo – the culmination of the ErieGives initiative that took place for twelve hours on August 2nd. A grand total of $771,430 was donated to 213 nonprofit organizations as a $75,000 ECF match and a $25,000 GE Transportation match was prorated to each of the organizations.

In September, we reported that Dr. Steven Curley, the lead investigator for the Kanzius Project, had three published manuscripts validating the effectiveness of killing human pancreatic cancer cells in vitro using John Kanzius’ methodology. Today, yet another manuscript, “Noninvasive Radiofrequency Field Destruction of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Xenografts Treated with Targeted Gold Nanoparticles,” is published in the American Association of Cancer Research’s (AACR) Clinical Cancer Research Journal.

Be patient. That seems to be the take-away message from the much-anticipated visit of Dr. Stephen Curley to Erie on Thursday.

Curley is the lead researcher on the cancer treatment device invented by Erie radio engineer John Kanzius. Curley announced during his trip to Erie from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston that progress has been made in testing the effectiveness of the Kanzius' device to kill cancer cells. Curley's research shows that the external radio-frequency generator destroys cancer cells in live mice without harming healthy tissue. He used a baseball analogy to explain the significance of that finding.
